There are six simple steps for an entrepreneur to start a small business the right way in Colorado:

Important Tip You can change what you are doing as your business grows and develops. Just get started - don't let start-up issues keep your business down.
  1. Name. Choose an available name for the small business.
  2. Entity. Choose and set up a form of entity for the small business — S Corp, C Corp, LLC, Partnership, etc.
  3. Employer ID Number. Obtain an employer ID number for the small business, in almost all cases.
  4. Business License. Check to see if a business license is required for the small business and obtain it if it is required.
  5. Sales Tax License. Obtain a sales tax license if the small business is selling stuff (other than real estate or services).
  6. If employees, other steps. A number of other steps are required if the small business has employees.
